Bemis Heights (2nd Saratoga)
7th October 1777

Another scenario Lardified for 'Times That Try Men's Souls' taken from the excellent Partizan Press
British Grenadier scenario books.

Paul B & Nige took command of the Crown forces with Max in command of the Rebel forces, not so ably
assisted by myself.

6' x 4' table set up is shown below;

Fraser's Light Infantry, 24th Regt of Foot & Foragers defend the wheatfield...

Enoch Poor's Brigade arrive...

Fraser deploys in extended order and begins a systematic withdrawl in good order...

The Rebels pour forward keen to engage the recoats...

Breymann in his redoubt....

Furious firefights erupt as the aggressive Rebels break down the fences and enter the wheatfield..

The Rebels are getting the worst of it though as the redcoats tenaciously hang on...

Morgan's riflemen and light infantry arrive on the British right flank...

Learned's brigade arrives on Poor's left...

Benedict Arnold arrives to bolster Poor's flagging Rebels...

Rebel momentum is momentarily restored and the assault continues...
but casualties are creeping up...

Learned's Brigade approaches Breymann's redoubt from the front....

Poor finally forces the Fraser out of the wheat field but his troops are a spent force...

Breymann is looking decidely nervous and suffering casualties from Morgan's riflemen.....

Riesedel shores up the British right flank with 'Hessians' and British Grenadiers
supported by artillery sections, whilst Burgoyne looks on.....

Morgan assaults the abbatis and the defenders fall back...

The crisis point of the battle, with only three turns left.

Poor's brigade (right rear) continues to pressure Fraser (centre, rear) but both sides have taken heavy
casualties and  are spent.

Breymann (left) has fallen back from his redoubt and abbatis, with Riesedel in support, in the face of
Morgan's assault.

Learned's (right, fore) slow progress is at last making its presence felt...

Can the British hold on?

Learned takes the initiative and rushes forward with the bayonet...the clock is ticking...

Riesedel bolsters his defence with the timely arrival of the British Grenadiers...

...and the Rebels are forced back temporarily....

The second assault succeeds though and the Grenadiers are routed....

The British have managed to hang on (just) as the game ends.
Casualties have been high in this hard fought contest with at least 800 men lost on either side.
The Americans have taken captured ten guns,  forced the enemy from the wheat fields and taken the
Breymann redoubt.

Although technically a stalemate Burgoyne has not done enough to change history and the surrender at
Saratoga, the watershed of the war, will still go ahead in a few days.

However, Morgan loses his life when killed leading Dearborn's light infantry in an assault on the 'Hessians'.
